Apropos of the conversation happening a few pages back, it's interesting to note the change in the description of BoT on Hill Farmstead's website (underlined for emphasis):

Retail page for 2015 release:

Birth of Tragedy is the imperial and oak barrel-aged version of our annual winter porter, Twilight of the Idols. Brewed with locally roasted coffee and Vermont honey, we age this beer for a year in personally selected bourbon barrels from our favorite distilleries.

Retail page for 2016 release:

Birth of Tragedy is the imperial and oak barrel aged version of our annual winter porter, Twilight of the Idols. Brewed with locally roasted coffee and Vermont honey, we age this beer for over a year in personally selected bourbon barrels from our favorite distilleries. Our brewers recommend that this beer be consumed within six months.

Twilight of the Idols is our winter porter. We brew Twilight each autumn, with a touch of locally roasted coffee and cinnamon, and age it on a blend of select vanilla beans. Originally conceived with a friend in 2009 while brewing in Denmark, the name of this annual release is inspired by the title of the last texts written by one of our philosophical idols, Friedrich Nietzche. 7.2% abv

I had a pour of BoT '14 at the Anniversary festivities in May of this year and it was still great, lots of roasted coffee and vanilla flavours

I last had BoT '15 in June '16 and was still awesome, from the bottle and plenty of vanilla. Had purchased this myself in April '15 and cellared

I still have one bottle left of the '15 batch and I hope to have it side by side with the '16 batch

So yeah very interesting that they added that to the description

I wonder if maybe that language is a general guideline that might not be intended for just this specific beer. Seems like HF is among a large number of breweries have had a lot of complaints, questions and the like about aging beer. Sometimes boilerplate language like this might help deflect those questions or at least simplify answering. It implies that if you store beer long term, that is on you and not the brewer's specific intentions or suggestion.

Mike Sardina is a lawyer as well as a brewer, maybe he is helping out with some of this stuff up there.

It's also on the GoM:Kieni (think someone pointed that out earlier) so maybe it's gonna pop up on anything with coffee in it?

FTFY

Birth of Tragedy Our lawyers recommend that this beer be consumed within six months.

Common side effects are gastrointestinal issues, including nausea, constipation and diarrhea. Other common aftereffects include shitlordery, razzles and mbc

Finally made the Vermont pilgrimage and decided to take everyone's advice and stay at the Old Stagecoach. Glad I went with this place, not only is it a stone's throw from the bars, but the breakfast is absolutely phenomenal. The food alone is worth the stay.

Yea, I suspect this is going to be printed on most special releases going forward. The guys at Hill obviously know their beers will generally keep well for quite a while when stored properly......they just don't have faith that people will actually store them properly.

I've NEVER seen a HF bottle for sale that hasn't been stored properly at cellar temp since purchase. This concern is obviously a myth.

I'm more interested in knowing if there's a story behind the "This beer is fermented with wild yeast and bacteria, which may result in a lactic and tart flavor profile" disclaimer that was on most of the printed signs for the saisons last time I was there. Hopefully there is and it involves someone trying to return "spoiled" beer.

That 2015 Sankt Hans is still flat as a pancake. First and likely only HF drainpour I've ever had. The Dorothy I had instead was carbed like champagne. Crazy how different they were.

weird, every bottle i've opened has been carbed :)

I'll be up in early December but think I need a trip up this month... been too long

Know someone who like WWII stuff? Staying at the Stagecoach? The old man has written not one, but two books about his time in the service. Support the old man and buy one of his books. Maybe even have a bourbon and listen to one of his stories...
I had the pleasure of chatting with him on the deck 1 day there. Awesome story teller and great guy !

I would enjoy SH with more carb, but I thought it was tasty as hell flat too. Flat Ete was the same, delicious but still would have been far better with carbonation.
I've had pours from two bottles of that SH batch. I enjoyed both a good deal and both were very flat. I'd absolutely enjoy it with some decent carbonation, but the taste is still enjoyable as is.

If Tragedy is still available next week, I may head up immediately after work/voting on Tuesday.

Unless you are a CW member, that would be a poor choice of days to go and if you were in fact a CW member, you could just buy that **** online and not have to hope you make it in time, like the rest of us pleebs.
