Hello All!
Im new to the world of Cider and live in North Florida. I am going to start making some cider soon with store bought apples and have a couple of questions that I cannot find answers to anywhere. I appreciate any responses!

1) I am planning on juicing my apples. Should I leave the seeds in the apples when I juice, even though I understand that they have a toxic substance? Or should I remove them? Im fairly knowledgeable about wine making and know that pressing the pips in grapes releases a very useful chemical which protects the juice from oxidation and contributes to longevity.

2) If I buy store bought apples which are wax coated will this harm the flavor of my cider? We do not have the climate for apple growing here, so this is really my only option.

Thank you guys in advance so much!

Arsenic is only present in minute concentrations in apple seeds, the main reason they are removed is because they cause bitter off-flavours in the final cider. Store bought apples probably aren't the way to go because of pesticides, herbicides and preservatives like the wax which you mentioned. If you are intent on doing this you will need to peel and core them and buy a hell of a lot of apples depending on how much juice you want to ferment. It would be a lot easier to find some good store-bought juice/cider (I see a lot of Americans talking about Mott's or Treetop, they might be able to help you more than I can with that), pitch your yeast and then go from there.

hi i make a few 'juicer ciders' every year since i don't own a press. two trips on my bike (this is the netherlands after all) to the local orchard and about an hour and a half of juicing and i've got my 12.5L carboy full. i never peel or core. the only time i ever got 'seedy' flavors was using a variety that didn't juice well, and i put the pulp through a second time. there was previously a discussion on here about whether or not your juicer will actually juice the seeds; mine does not, it generally spits them out whole. the biggest concern for me using the juicer is selecting varieties that juice well. some do and some just don't. usually (but not always) the firmer ones are better. good luck
