Hey everyone!

I've been making wine for a few years now and for some reason thought that making beer was too magical a process to attempt with the boiling, chilling, and what not, so I stayed away from it. What the h#!! was I thinking?

It's pretty straightforward and my first brew is fermenting happily as I write.
It's also great that I don't have to wait 6 months to a year for my brew to be drinkable like I do with my wine.

Anyway, this forum is great and I've already learned a tremendous amount of info while cruising around the threads. And I promise I won't start any "did I ruin my beer/is my fermentation stuck/why does my two week old brew taste bad" threads :D

Which part of Missouri are you in? Where do you get your brewing supplies? I spent a summer there once and it seemed pretty hard to find specialty stuff like that.

Also, my mom lives by Bennett Springs and I can never find any good beer when I visit her. I usually end up going to wally-world and buying Boulevard. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your 1st brew! Its probably good you started with wine, because you will already have, what most new brewers don't...patience!! :)

I'm in Missouri also, in the St Charles area. Where about are you located?

Thanks for the welcomes. :mug:

For those asking, I'm in Columbia and the only LHBS is downtown in a place that also sells buddha statues, neon Jesuses, and fake dog doo...so, yeah, I order my supplies, mostly from Midwest in MN. There's a place in Jefferson City that just opened (or I just noticed) a year or so ago but haven't tried. It's down by West School on Main Street, if that means anything to anyone.

There are a couple of brew pubs here in town: Flat Branch and Broadway Brewery. I highly recommend the beer from the former and the latter is all right--although both have great food.

@Nateo--I'm not sure what's beyond Columbia's borders as far as brew pubs go but Schlafly out of St. Louis has, in my opinion, some good offerings. I think MO Wal-Marts carry them but I'm not sure. All of our local grocers do. I've tried their Hefeweizen and Oatmeal Stout and liked them both.

Welcome, I'm from Columbia as well. Check out this site for some local brewers. www.columbiabeerenthusiasts.com.
I hear you re the hippy shop. We often get sacks of malt from STL and do large group buys.

Oh, and Broadway makes better beer :D.

There's some great stuff on the website. I didn't know that there are so many dedicated brewers here in Columbia (also I didn't know Cool Stuff had a homebrew club). Thanks for recommending it!

My vote is still for Flat Branch as the best though :) ...I've been drinking their stuff for so long that I tend to compare everything else to them--probably a bad habit, but, hey, I'm a stubborn old man :mug:

The homebrew club at Cool Stuff is really just a 10% discount on your purchases. They, to my knowledge, don't have any formal club that does tastings etc. Though, they did sponsor a competition not too long ago.
