I brewed up a stout yesterday and its churning away great but the temp is high, 79 degrees. I used wyeast 1084 irish ale. Is it too late to put it in a cold bath?

79 is the temp in the room, or the temp in the fermentor? You can bring it down, it needs to come down like 15 degrees though. Sometimes when you try to bring it down that much very quickly the yeast will drop out. Either way its not going to be a perfect batch, especially if its a dry stout but it is a perfect learning experience :)

I just put my glass carboy into a slightly wider plastic bucket filled with cold water. Although I am not sure that will last for very long, is there any better way to lower temperature even a few degrees?

79 is what my fermometer says. Its in the basement that is 64 even in the heat we've been having. I'm going to put it in a half 55 gallon plastic drum with water, my well spits out 56 degree water.

Wow that's a hot fermentation... I pretty much always use a water bath now, unless its winter. You can put frozen gallons of ice in it, or whatever you need to. Btw im pretty much drooling over your 64 degree basement and ice cold well water. My tap water is like 78 degrees lately, I can only chill my wort down to about 85, then I need to put it in the carboy and in an icebath to get it down to pitching temps
