HERMS with Cooler MLT?

I was wondering if there was much of a need for a herms system if using a cooler for MLT. Its seems since it's already insolated you're not going to see the same temp drop as if using a kettle.

I'm working on building my all grain setup and trying to figure out which way to proceed.

Currently I'm doing a two tier, two vessel with one pump setup. I'm working on going to a BCS all electric system, and just had a few questions to help point me in the right direction.

I built a HERMS using a cooler MLT to recirculate through the HLT, but it turned out as you said, very little temp drop over the mash time. It ended up working very nicely for hands off recirculating during the mash out, coming out crystal clear into the BK, so I would recommend it for this reason.

I have done about 50 Ag batches with my igloo mash tun and just recently added a herms setup with the more beer plastic QD's. Not sure it really makes a difference as I was always recirculating with my pump for the last 10 mins anyways. Maybe helps bring to mashout temp but that doesn't matter either if you batch sparge... Still not convinced it improved my process at all yet or just added more time to it...

Do it! 90% eff in mt cooler mlt. I set the pid and just, let her roll for 60 or 70 minutes. Then jack the temp to mashout and give it a few minutes to reach temp.. great setup

I have a 10g cooler MLT and a BCS HERMS system. I love it, I did a brew this weekend where I wanted to do a ramp mash for a highly fermentable wort. I set the BCS to ramp the HLT temp from 145-155 over the course of 1.5 hours, worked like a charm - I didn't have to even be there to watch it, the thing just ran it's course and in an hour and a half I came back and stepped the HLT to 170 for mashout.
