Hey All,

I am doing my first ever homebrew. I just finished boiling and it is now cooling until I put it in my fermenter.

I used a hydrometer in a flask to determine the OG of my brew. It is currently sitting at the first mark bellow 50. Am I right in assuming that the OG is 1.51? or is it 1.52?

Thanks

You have to add a zero to the right of the decimal. The reading would be 1.052.

If you didn't cool the sample to around 60° F you will have to adjust the reading for a higher temp.

It can vary depending on the scale of the hydrometer you have. Majority will be segmented by .002 so like grampamark mentioned it would be 1.052. To verify, count the number of spaces between the 50 and 60. If there is 5 (chances are good) then that's what you have, if there are 10 spaces, then it will be segmented by .001.

Here's some information on hydrometers and a temperature correction chart. Still a lot of good reading here even though this is Palmer's previous edition. The latest edition is definitely worthy of purchase.
