Help! Lost a gallon during fermentation

Did a nut brown ale today when I set fermenter up with blowoff tube I stuck the blowoff tube a bit too far in when I check back on it about an hour later there was beer flowing out of the tube. Can I add water at any point? It already started to ferment.

You shouldn't have much difficulty adding sterilized water to your fermenter as far as the yeast is concerned. Personally i would take the loss rather then water it down. you can use this calculator to find out what the added water will do to your SG. http://www.brewersfriend.com/dilution-and-boiloff-gravity-calculator/

Could always boil some DME in the top off water to replace what would be diluted. Won't help with hop bitterness/aroma/flavor but I suppose you could always throw some of them in with the DME as well!?!?!!

Yeah I am worried about watering it down. This was a new recipe and I'd like to see how it really turns out. Really upset about this but what are ya gonna do right.

Don't add water. I would just take the hit and chuck it up to a lesson learned. No biggie in the grand scheme of things.

You're absolutely right solbes. I definitely will not make that mistake again.

Take it for what it is. Just see the ferment through. If you need with it you lose repeatability. Leave it be and you can build off this batch, making your next batch better.
