Hi guys;

I want to brew coffee stout. I searched on the internet and I found most of the people go for all grain;however, I live in a small flat and I just want to keep easy. I always make my beer from cooper`s kits. I tried several of them. They are nice. For Coffee stout, I thought I can use Coopers Stout kit. I searched on the internet and combined all recipes and now I made up this recipe;

* Coopers stout kit
* Dried malt extract
* Brown sugar (some people suggest brown sugar, rather than using brewing sugar )
* Coffee, Caramel and Chocolate extracts.

I`m going to brew my beer from kit with DME and brown sugar, after primary I will add my coffee, caramel and chocolate extracts.I will leave it secondary. Then as normal i will use beer cleaner and I will bottle it. Do you think It turns out well? Or I just wonder if you have any suggestions.
 
If you want something special why not steep a few grains and forget the extracts.
I've never used them but I have a feeling you'll not end up with a quality product.

I'd definitely brew up a coffee rather than using extract.
 
+1 to what the gnome said, although I say if you want ease for use and a good recipe, goto Austin Homebrew Supply grab their brand stout and add some cold brewed coffee in a secondary. Not a big fan of the coffee in a stout but I am a fan of coffee in an oatmeal stout, it's a little more work on the brewing end but I feel it's worth it so just some suggestions.
 
Guys I live in UK. Austin homebrew supply seems in USA. I have only one change to get materials from my local supplier. www.thebrewmart.com this is my local supply. Can you tell me which materials I can use if go for all grain in this store. It seems to me there is not too much material about stout making. I looked some recipes but I couldn`t find that materials in this store.
 
I am sure that the above companies will ship overseas. Or, midwest lists their recipes on their website. You could pick up you supplies locally.

That's why it's a good idea to put your location in your profile. You'll get information specific to your location.
Where are you in the uk?


Any worthy HBS can provide the ingredients needed.

All you need is chocolate malt and or back malt.

If you ask them they should be able to advice and supply what you need.;

If they suggest extracts then I'd question their skill and experience.

I added some cold seeped coffee to my brown porter in secondary with fantastic results. Just put a few ounces of coffee grinds in a french press, filled it halfway with water, stirred, and left it in the fridge for a day. If you want a strong coffee flavor, I would suggest filling about half the press with coffee grinds.
 
Or he could use the high quality Coopers stout kit. He says the Coopers kits are nice. He doesn't want to use a generic malt extract. I say go for it.

I've had luck with steeping about 1/2 lb of (freshly ground) coffee at flame out for about 5-10 minutes.
 
Sorry, I changed my profile and added my location. I found chocolate malt and other malts. I change my mind. If I find simple recipe I will go for all grain.I`m trying to find simple all grain recipe for coffee stout. All recipes which I found look complicated. So many grains written there, they mixed different grains. So Guy if you know, could you give me a simple recipe for all grain coffee stout.
 
Do you have the kit for all grain?

You can make a recipe as simple as you want.

Base malt
Chocolate malt
Black malt
Hops.

Add coffee to the fermenter.

Using multiple grains is no more difficult than using one grain.

Take a look in the All grain section for clarification of what all grain is. There's some great walk troughs.

I was just suggesting you do an extract kit and steep a few grains to add depth, flavour and colour to yor brew.
 
No I don`t have equipment and honestly I don`t have space to put them. So If I do it with grains, the only think I can do is partial mesh brewing. I think I just need cloth bags, big pot to boil them and thermometer. I already have my extract brewing materials as well.
 
I have got 3 questions;

*How many kilograms of grain do I need for 5 Gallon?
*If I don`t find such a big pot like 3 to 5 gallon, Can I boil in 4 small saucepan.
*Can I use crushed crystal malt as a base malt?

Base malt is only needed for partial mash or all grain.

Thanks Orfy but I don`t understand what does (ish) means there? Is that 3 to 5 kilogram.

Second of all I have no budget. I`m postgraduate student. Two weeks ago my laptop smashed and I bought new one. I spent too much many for my budget so far. If I find a 5 gallon pot from somewhere or borrow from somebody, I want to go for partial mash. I have been doing research about coffe stout since yesterday. I made up my recipe.

3 to 5 lb base malt ( I haven`t decided yet)
1 lb roasted barley malt grains
1 lb chocolate malt grains
1 lb crystal malt grains
1 or 2 lb DME
1 or 2 lb Brown sugar
Yeast ( I have no idea about which one is suitable for job)
In the secondary fermentation I will add coffee, caramel and chocolate extract.

If yo ask me why I use extract because I`ll take my extract from my aunt who works for one of world`s biggest coffee companies as researcher. Their extracts are so powerful and high quality. Just few drops will be enough for 5 gallon. So more or less , how does my recipe seems? Does it good, or What else will I need?
 
ish means around 3 -5 kg dependant of the strength of the brew you want.

With out spending too much time looking at the recipe It's got the makings of a coffee stout. I'm not sure I'd add any sugar, at least not 2lbs.
You are missing hops.

You'll need some one with Partial mash experience to recommend the volume of the pot and amounts of water required.

You could run your recipe through this http://hbd.org/cgi-bin/recipator/recipator to give you end results.



You'll not be able to do a "Normal" 5 gallon brew in a 5 gallon pot.

You may want to decide what strength you want it to be and work back.
 
I would prefer more coffee taste rather than normal dry stout taste. So I don`t want too strong or too wick. Middle is the best for me. But I would like to have more alcohol. It can be above 5%, and 6 % can be perfect. I decided to use 4 kg of grains for middle taste. Am I right?
But however alcohol? How can I redound alcohol percentage?
So you think which base malt go good with this type of beer? Also Which hops could be good?
