I'm a North Mississippian just getting started in home brewing. I've jumped into this hobby out of necessity as much as my love of craft beer.

Mississippi is the last state in the union to ban the sale of any beer with an ABV over 5.9%. This has given the big corporate breweries a stranglehold on distribution. It's hard to find a beer that can't afford to splash it's logo on a Nascar driver's helmet.

I'm not optimistic the situation is going to change any time soon...so hello homebrew. I've got my gear and I'm ready to start. One more rebel brewer in the harshest beer environment in the free world.

Greetings and welcome to the obsession. Your gear purchase was only the down payment on this awesome hobby!

I feel your pain man, WV had a 6% cap up until July 1. I made the first beer over 7% I ever tasted (an Old Ale w/Cascades). Honestly though, you can make some damn good beer on your own and for a lot cheaper (well....depending on how much you like gadgets) than you can buy. A lot of people say ABV shouldn't matter, but they may be taking it for granted. It seems to me you can pack in a lot more flavor, plus sometimes it's nice to drink two or three Imperial Stouts and get a quick buzz before bed.

They said before that if they raised the cap it would lead teenagers into alcoholism....yeah. Tell me, are they going to pay $8 for a bottle of Rochefort or $12 on a case of Natty Lite...I think we know the answer.

There are hundreds of great craft beers under 6%. I suspect the distributors have more to do with a poor selection than the ABV cap.

Still, any reason to justify a decent brewing rig.

Welcome.
