My name is Derek, and by Philly-ish, I mean that I am just on the outskirts of the city limits in Flourtown. New to the site, but not new to brewing. I just joined the site a couple of days ago, while doing a search on building a RIMS system. Looking to make the switch to all grain by the end of the summer. While doing research on the RIMS system, I got sucked into building a lager fridge. Should have that completed this weekend.

More about myself: My wife and I have been brewing beer for 7 (I think) years now. Currently only partials, but have seemed to finally get that much more repeatable than when we first started. We are part of the G.L.U.B. Club (General Lafayette Underground Brewers Club - sadly the GLI is now defunct). Same name, just have a new meeting place in Chestnut Hill.

I have a house Citra Pale Ale that is always on tap, and other brews (whatever strikes my wife's fancy) go on the second tap. Currently a Dunklewisse is in the primary, a pale ale in the secondary, and a Schwarzbeir is planned to be brewed this weekend.

Outside of brewing, my hobbies include: woodworking, ice hockey, mt. Biking, and BBQ. Hopefully by the end of the summer I should have a new smoker on a trailer, and if planned right, the single tier brew rig will also be able to be loaded on the trailer and double as a 3 burner stove for BBQ events.

In any event, looking forward to learning much more from everyone here!

Hello Derek. Welcome to the site. I am sure you will be able to contribute with 7 years under your belt. I am from Horsham and play hockey as well. Do you skate at WSC?

If WSC = wintersport, then yes! If it's Warwick, then no. :D

BTW, I would love to know how your Peanut Butter Stout comes out. i have been asked for a beer like this from a group of friends. I've been looking for a recipe that would work (without much luck).

Welcome. If you want to meet others brewers in your area there is a HUGE home brew club in NJ. Its over 115 strong. We plan on a big Homebrew Day May 7th @ Iron Hill Maple Shade. Let me know if you need more club info.

WSC is Wissahickon Skating Club. I play there in the spring and summer. I play at Wintersport in the winter. I haven't brewed that stout yet. It is in the wheel house though. I will post if I ever pull it off. Have you attempted anything like it yet?

No, I've never attempted anything like this peanut butter beer. Oatmeal stout/peanut butter? yum.

What team do you play for in the winter?

I play for the Penguins. There are a two guys who play for the Rams who brew also. I don't think either are on this site though. How about you? Who do you play for?

My peanut butter stout recipe is still in the design stage. There are a few threads on this site. The biggest obstacle is how to get the peanut flavor into the beer. Some brewers have attempted to use natural peanut butter, spread it over a shallow pan and allow the oils to collect on the surface so they can be removed. All who have attempted this method report a faint hint of peanut butter at best. Some guys have tried this with two pounds of peanut butter. Another school of thought is a powdered peanut butter product called PB2. The results are a little better but nothing to write home to Mom about.

Welcome, I'm a brewer in Philly.

I wish i played Ice, i'm stuck with playing Roller for now, i'd love to get back on the ice, i haven't ice skated since i was young.

Peanut Butter stout sounds quite interesting.
I had an idea while drunk to try to make a french toast stout.

I play for the Revolution (formerly known as the Knights).

Thanks for the heads up on the PB2, hadn't heard of that. I will do some more research into it!

Thanks! I grew up in UPSNY, just outside of Rochester. I think I learned to skate at about the same time I learned to walk! Have only missed one season since, due to breaking my leg into a bunch of pieces (while playing in a summer league in Jersey).

Now a French toast beer does sound interesting. I would have no idea how to go about that thought. Vanilla bean/cinnamon in a maibock? Trying to think of a "bready" style beer.
