New member here. Hello from Sin City...
I came across a recipe for home made ginger ale and thought I would like to try my hand at making some but wanted to be able to ask those who know questions... So I did a search for home brewing forums.
I haven't done any "home brewing" in decades. Back when I was a kid my dad would make some???.... Not sure what you would call it...he called it apple jack or Hooch. When I turned 16 he let me help. We had to do it when mom was gone for a while since she was anti-drinking. We had a 5 gallon glass bottle (I wish I still had that thing) and he would pour about a pound of sugar, a package of yeast (mom made bread) and then we cut up apples, opened canned peaches, pears, some orange juice and apple juice, threw in some raisins, honey, and pretty much anything else we could find that would ferment. He then filled the jug with water and folded a piece of cheese cloth a couple of times and used a rubber band on it. When it finally finished fermenting, we used a rubber hose to drain off the liquid and leave the fruit and sludge on the bottom. It packed a pretty good kick. And to make it even better, when winter came, it would freeze and we would pour off the alcohol into another jug. Now that was awesome.. But you could only drink a little at a time or it would really kick yer butt.. I also made some brew on the side with rice and raisins, sugar and yeast. It was pretty potent also..
Anyway, That was then. I would like to try doing something more along the normal brewing lines... I have gotten to really like mead and will probably like to try some of that. But mostly would like to try brewing root beer and other sodas... And I might even give the old Hooch a shot for old times sake... LOL
