Hello from Cali. First Time Brew!

Hello HBT! I have been lurking these forums for a while now, trying to gain as much information and knowledge as possible before I start I first batch. I purchased the Brewer's Best kit from http://www.homebrewit.com/ but before I start, I wanted to see if there was anything else I needed before I start? I got the Deluxe kit so I have 1 fermenting bucket and 1 glass carboy. In the carboy I plan to start EdWort's Apfelwein, but I want to do a fast beer in the bucket. Something that takes a few weeks to finish so I can get in some more practice. And suggestions? Thanks again guys for all the great info and knowledge.
