"have been thinking of being my own beer."

^ that's not one of the steps. you need to buy a beginners home brew book and research the process ;)

I have made several of the stout type kits from northern Brewer and my wife thinks the results are great. The nice thing about ordering from NB is the flat rate shipping. This is also offered by many of the other merchants like Austin Home Brew Supply.

Here is the basic starter kit I began this hobby with. It has everything you need except a large brew pot.

Here are 2 extract recipe kits that I made in my forst 3-4 months of brewing. Both of these came out great.

Hey Jeff, what type of stouts do you like? A dry stout is a very simple recipe to start with. It's similar to Guiness draught, but better. Here's a recipe:

6 lbs liquid malt extract
1 lb roasted barley
2 ounces east kent goldings hops added at 60 minutes

That one is a pretty forgiving recipe and will finish very quickly. In fact, it tastes best fresh.

Oh and use brewmasterswarehouse or northernbrewer both are great sites.

Midwest Supplies, Northern Brewer, Brewmaster's Warehouse. I have ordered from those 3 and all seem pretty good. It is best to look at several different places to get the best price. Midwest charges actual shipping rates but they still generally come out with the best price for me. I have heard good things about AHS but have not ordered from them yet. I would go with one of those as opposed to Amazon for ingredients. For the brewpot and other equipment you could order from Amazon. Check prices.
