I've been brewing for about a month now. This forum has been super helpful. I'm glad to be a part of this community.

My first of many questions. Is a lot of foam from a porter a normal thing? I brewed last night and this morning the valve was foamed through and it's a little frightening. I hope I didn't lose the batch to infection or something.

Welcome!

Some beers just produce a lot of krausen. Sometimes, the same exact recipe will produce a ton of krausen one time, and less the next - most likely not something to worry about. The couple things you can watch: make sure you're doing your best to maintain the right fermenter temperature for your yeast, and always use a blow-off tube so you don't wind up with a massive mess should the krausen gum up your air lock. Just do a quick search on blow-off tube and you'll find plenty of suggestions and pictures to show how best to set one up.

Sweet. Thank you. I could use my siphon tube and a small bucket. The beer smells just fine, but my last batch hardly foamed at all. I was a little frightened.
