Head Space

I'm thinking about getting a SS Brewtech 1/2 bbl fermenter. I can do 15-17 gallon batches but now only have a 14.5 gallon conical fermenter. My question is if I have a 17 gallon fermenter can I still do 10-12 gallon batches in it or is that too much head space?

I'm not speaking from experience because I have not ventured past 10 gallon batches, but I would think that is too much head space. It may work just fine but for that much beer, I would not take the risk of oxidation.
