Just started bottling a Irish Stout and there was a foamy head in the bottle. I did not put the cap on based on the idea it might be to gassy and will explode. Should I wait until the head disperses or is it ok to bottle?

There's going to be some dissolved CO2 in the liquid that will come out of solution when you disturb it. Bottle away.

i would cap them pronto. Just keep the bottles in cases and if you hear them going off get them to a cold space immediately. Also wear safety glasses and full shrapnel gear.

Nah. So long as they were at a stable FG, the dissolved CO2 isn't going to be likely to push it over the edge. You'd have to have it seriously carbed up. I get foam all the time when I bottle.

Also, in future, check your gravity a few days in a row when you think it's done. If you've got a final gravity near where you think it's supposed to be and the gravity isn't moving then bottle it. If not, wait.

fg was finished at 1.018 og was 1.046 and because of no time it sat in primary for 2 weeks after 3 steady readings in a row so i know it was done. Went ahead and bottled. First taste was good with a hint of coffee at the end. This is 3rd batch (all stupid proof kits) and if this doesn't turn out well I may decide this is not the hobby for me!!!

Was this sanitizer foam? What sanitizer did you use. I use starsan and my bottles always foam up and over. I use the beer to void out the foam.

How are you filling your bottles, with a bottling wand? Are you filling from the bottom up or are you pouring from the spigot into the bottles. Did you over agitate them when you are filling them?

I used 1 step and bottling wand. After thinking about it I'm not sure there is a true explanation because not all the bottles had foam in them. I bottled and no bombs yet (24 hours).
