So I've procured a very suitable full sized Sweetwater keg that's just begging to be turned into a boil kettle. I'm perfectly willing to go with the 4.5" grinder from Harbor Freight to open this baby up if need be but I hear that a plasma cutter in the hands of a knowledgeable operator is infinitely quicker. I was wondering if you fine folks know of such a person in the greater ATL area. I'd be more than willing to trade a few of my recent chocolate milk stouts for the service. OR, if anyone knows of a shop that would do it for a reasonable fee that would be helpful also. Thanks all.

FWIW, I can plasma a keg top off in nearly a perfect circle in less than a minute. I'll clean the edge up a bit with a flap disc to take off any leftover dross if I need. It is pretty handy.

If you make it out to AZ then let me know and I'll cut it up for you. :D

Post a wanted ad for a plasma cutter on Craig's list. Welders love beer, so you may be able to work it out. I would suspect you could get someone to do it for $20 or less. When I did it, we build a slug to go in the 2" hole with a center hole and screw. We attached the plasma to it and cut perfect circles in under a minute. Keep in mind there will be some clean up needed. These were plasma cut and not smoothed out, so you get the idea.

I used my Makita grinder with a metal cutting blade and was done in ten minutes including the cleanup and de-burring. The circle drawing was perfect with a bundt cake pan that fit neatly over the tap flange. A plasma cutter is great if you have one but chasing it down could be a lot of trouble.
