Have you ever brewed the perfect beer

As my as I like my beers, I can't say I've ever thought one was "perfect". I'm pretty critical, and bring out my BJCP judge attitude when I drink my own beer.

I think that the "perfect" beer is like the Holy Grail or something- the joy is in the pursuit, and since I'm so critical I will never find it. That keeps me trying.

If only that thread had come after we weren't allowed to childishly delete our own threads any more...

I've brewed many a beer that I think is absolutely fantastic, and I have a few *recipes* that I don't intend on changing. But there's always a point of improvement. Aroma intensity, flavor intensity, shelf life, clarity, head texture, head retention, etc.

And beyond that, the "perfect" beer is entirely context driven.

I have poured a beer and said to myself "this one is amazingly good"

But I don't think anyone can truly say they brewed the perfect beer since taste is subjective.

All of mine, however good, can be improved upon.

I did a milk chocolate stout and a bourbon barrel porter once both were awesome... but that was last year and i've brewed many beers that are meh. Good but not great. Never perfect... yet.

I have taken a few sips and said, "Damn I can brew a great beer!"

Then I say it again later and my wife gives me side-eye for repeating myself.

my four recent brews:
hoppy heffeweizen
nut-brown ale
10-min pale ale
10-min ipa

kegged the HH, and thought, wow that actually came out really good for being an experiment!

kegged the nut-brown, and my wife said, wow you really do make really good beer.

bottled the pale ale, and a friend said, oh my god, i hope to make good beer like this one day.

bottled the ipa... never tried one of the hops before, don't know what the problem was, guessing just an overload at the end. tastes like ****. not at all easy to finish one bottle. now a new experiment, age it until the hops flavor fades out...

point being, i think we can all make some pretty good beers if we follow the typically important things to a T. but that doesn't mean we can't easily make crappy beers in between.

i'm like yooper except that i'm no bjcp judge. super critical of my own product, and therefore know i will never make a perfect beer.

Seriously, if you want to get better at brewing, get better at evaluating beer objectively. If you want to get better at evaluating beer, get BJCP certified. Even if you don't brew to style, it'll make your palate that much better, and improve your knowledge of what shows up where and why, and how to fix the problems.

I made the perfect brew once, was all my leftovers, including hops. My bro-inlaw I'm pretty sure slept beside my keg orator until it was gone. Unrepeatable sadly, no notes, no nothing just kitchen sink and a hail Mary

My Johnny Utah IPA... First pull and I was blown away by it. All Amarillo/chinook, and it smelled/tasted commercial. 10 gal didn't last long. Aside from me, friends were pulling bullets left and right to take home. Scored a high 42 and 40 overall in our state comp. I have a but load of Amarillo I plan on remaking it with.

My self-evaluation levels:
  1. Hmmm, what happened? Maybe it'll age out.
  2. Hey, not bad.
  3. That's pretty good.
  4. I can't believe I made that!

I'm afraid to brew the perfect beer. The impact on the cosmic tumblers is likely to cause Comet Hale-Bopp to change its orbit and return with the Heaven's Gate cult to pick me and my beer up for eternity. I wouldn't mind spending eternity with the perfect beer, but I just can't hang with those cats.
