I started brewing a couple weeks ago after a 3 year hiatus. I like to harvest my yeast, but can you still do this if you skip the secondary?

Sorry if this was answered already, but I could only see it asked a couple places with no answers.

I'm guessing if not, the alternative would be to create a larger starter and harvest from that.

I've done washing and top cropping many times. Both methods have worked well for me. Although I feel more comfortable with top cropping. I don't feel 100% confident washing yeast because the steps required make it more vulnerable to infection and I can't be certain of its viability. But it never caused a problem for me.
