Hey guys,

I moved from extract to BIAB recently and i am no longer using hop bags, so when i transferred to my primary, even thou i strained, i have lots of trub from all the hops in my boil.

The question is, is it ok to harvest the yeast under these conditions? I am pretty sure there will be lots of hops mixed with the yeast even after i wash, right?

yeah, your yeast will be pretty dirty. I think a good idea would be to make a starter with it right as you harvest it, then store that clean yeast

Better idea would be to overbuild your starters and harvest clean healthy yeast from that

Yes that is indeed a good idea, maybe feed the starter twice to have enough and do that.

I think that is what i am going to do moving forward, but just out of curiosity, if i do harvest from my current fermenter with all the hops, what can happen when reusing that yeast? Maybe some of the taste from the old beer will be there? If that is the case, if i brew the same recipe will it be noticeable?
 
Harvest the hoppy yeast and add it to a jar with at least 50% water, let it get cold, then shake it up and let it sit again. Within a short time (20-30 minutes), the hops should settle rapidly leaving the water cloudy with suspended yeast. Don't wait for the yeast layer to settle again - decant the cloudy liquid into another container. This is called yeast "washing" and is an effective way of reducing the amount of trub in the harvested sample.

Nice, so it is possible after all! In the future i will create bigger starters and harvest from there, but for this on i will give this a try :)
