Hey all,

I think I may have screwed up during my last brew. I was supposed to steep 3 pounds of various grains at 150 for 50 mins. However I discovered that I did not have a grain sack. Instead I just tossed it in the pot with the water at temp and stirred and maintained the temp for the duration. Later during the boil 6 lbs LME got added as well as brown sugar. I was unable to get og reading. What do you think is going to happen. Also I double pitched safale-04. It's been fermenting like crazy. Thanks!

If you skimmed the grains out with a colander or something prior to boiling, you'll be fine. If you ended up boiling all that grain, you could end up with some significant astringency issues.

No, I removed grain prior to boiling. It's supposed to be an Irish red. The wort tasted ok, although I'm not sure thats any indication.

Yeah as long as you remove the grain it essentially the same as using the bag, maybe better. The bag is really just for convenience.

Hello, I dump the grains into the steeping water all the time, steep then strain out before the boil, works great.

Cheers :mug:
