Just had a pergola built and am looking to grow hops in the planters that contain the vertical columns. Mainly want to grow hops for the aesthetic purpose, and because I like beer and think it would be a cool thing, vice grapes or other vines. Getting to the point, my question is how deep does the false bottom on the planter need to be to accomodate the roots? Or, is it a bad idea all-together? Live in southern California and hops don't grow naturally here. Based on internet research, would probably have to grow Nugget or Cascade to stand a chance. Paving stones are under the planter, so no soil there. Will have to put soil above the false bottom.

not sure what a pergola is but i am growing cascade, nugget and mt hood in 2-3 gallon pots and they are loving it.
