The traditional beverage of the British navy and pirates, grog is a refreshing drink that's super easy to make. So between beers tonight, make yourself a mug of grog, and taste history.
There's really no exact recipe for grog. It was a way for seamen to make the algae-covered, slimy water more palatable on long ocean crossings. It's typically a mix of rum, water, citrus juice and spices. Here is my easy, delicious recipe.
Add an ounce or two of decent rum to a glass. I like mount gay or appleton estate for cheap but good rum. Please don't use bacardi or something similar.
Add a splash of lemon or lime juice to the glass.
Grate in some nutmeg and cinnamon (or use preground if that's what you have).
Add a splash of simple syrup (mine is from demerara sugar but any mix of 1/1 sugar/water will work).
Top off the glass with water.
It's a light, delicate, refreshing drink that is perfect for these hot summer days. Go ahead and make a couple, you'll probably like them!
