Hello all,

I am new to this board and also new to brewing. I am interested in brewing from scratch (i.e. grains/ malt and hops). I would very much appreciate if someone can tell me what exactly I need to get started. I look forward to gaining as much information on this site to learn the art of brewing my very own beer.
I have also just bought 2 books over the internet which should be delivered this week. They are “The Complete Joy Of Home Brewing Third Edition” by Charlie Papazian and “How To Brew: Everything You Need to Know to Brew Beer Right for the first Time” by John J. Palmer. Is there any other books which you can recommend I buy.

You have done yourself a great thing by getting the literature you did. They are both VERY beneficial books and will help out a great deal. What I would recommend since you haven't brewed before is get yourself a very simple homebrewing kit just to get yourself familiar with the whole craftsmanship part of it. A lot of people knock it, but I got one of those simple 2 gallons kits from Mr. Beer.com. It was cheat, simple and very easy and it will give you an idea of the missions on which your are about to embark. Good Luck!:rockin:

Between those books, and this site, you'll have all the knowledge you need to get going. If you're new to brewing, extract kits are the way to go without investing a bunch of money into equipment.

To address your needs to begin homebrewing, you can check out some of the homebrew supplier websites that members of this forum frequent (note, these are US-based companies and may not be able to ship to Ireland):

While you may not be able to order from these places, some of the starter kits will give you an idea of what equipment is necessary to get started, as well as good upgrades from a basic setup. Your beginning homebrew in much the same manner as I did. Here are a few things I learned along the way...

-Readup on starting equipment in both books. Good, sound advice.
-Goto http://www.northernbrewer.com/ and look at what they include in their beer kits.
-Try a kit for your first batch. The equipment needed for a kit is nothing more than a sub-set of the same equipment used for partial/all grain.
-Got specific questions? Use the Search funtion on this site. If you don't see what your looking for, post a new thread :cross:
-Try and find a local homebrew club or organization and join. Attend their brew days (if they have them). Ask 1001 questions of it's members.

Welcome Niall.

My mom's from Tipp and my dad's from Laois.

I wasn't brave enough to start with the all grain, so I have been doing the kits and then extracts just to make sure I have the back-end down pat first. They still turn out better than mainstream commercial beers already.
