For those that are in need of a decent price brew kettle, I found that Sam's Club has a pretty good price on a 24 qt (6 gal) ALUMINUM (Not trying to start the Stainless vs Aluminum debate) with a lid for only $33!

Thought that was a steal! Even if you "ruined" it drilling it for probes or taps, $33 is like nothing!

Or get a 32 qt aluminum "Tamale Steamer" at Target for $20

That's cool. I found some 22qt (if i remember corectly) SS pots for $40 at Wal mart. Not as good a deal unless you don't have a target nearby.

Hey, has anybody actually used one of these tamale steamers before? I ask because if they work fine, I saw that Target has a nested set of them for $111. The set includes a 20 qt. Tamale Steamer, 32 qt. Tamale Steamer, 40 qt. Tamale Steamer, 24 qt. Tamale Steamer, 50 qt. Tamale Steamer.

the only problem I have seen with the economy pots is that they are very thin and tend to crack if you lift them by the handles when full.

Here is a thread on that pot cracked pot

Oh I'm not debating that, they are super thin. You have to be gentle with them since they are very easy to dent if you hit them into something. I just wanted to point out that you can have SS for that price if you so choose. Meaning of course that there is probably a cheaper aluminum option out there, OR you have choices at that price range.

I've used a tamale steamer for several batches and haven't had any problems. I don't lift mine when full because I use an immersion chiller and then siphon into the primery.

I've been thinking about the tamale steamer and how it would make an excellent BIAB pot. You could drop the false bottom in and that would keep the bag of grains sufficiently off the bottom of the pot so you don't have to worry about burning the bag. That way, when you're done, you pull out the bag, pull out the false bottom (I'm envisioning attaching a small chain to it that drapes over the kettle rim) and move right to the boil.

You could even attach a spigot to it that would allow gravity feed to the fermenter (using either a counterflow or immersion chiller to cool after the boil).

Can anyone see any problems with this??

i need someone with a sams club membership!! I need a 15gal HLT and the alum one would be perfect for half the price of a stainless
