I'm brewing a grapefruit pale ale and my starting Gravity is only 1.040 should be 1.050 I believe and this a issue
 
If it's extract, you probably didn't mix well enough. Really common. Assuming extract, if you added all the extract and the correct amount of water, your gravity will be correct.

If all grain, potentially issues with conversion. Let us know.
 
It's really murky milky looking too.. I've only done porters and imperial stouts so not sure if that's what it should look like lol
 
Hmmm. You may not have fully converted the starches to sugars. How long did you mash, what temperature (is your thermometer good?)? What is the final volume of beer?

If your gravity is low, the quick answers are that you have too much water or not enough sugar (or it isn't mixed right). Mixing issues and too much water are kind of obvious as far as what to do next brew. Not enough sugar coming from your grain is a little more tricky to fix for the future. Do you know what the expected conversion efficiency was for your recipe? It's generally 75%, but if it was written by someone who usually gets better efficiency that might account for part of the issue.

Milky in the boil and to the fermenter is ok. Everything will settle out at the end of fermentation.

Did you do a full volume BIAB, or did you save some of your water for sparging? If you sparged, what was your process?

Things we need to know in order to offer any advice:
  • Grain bill weight
  • Total brewing water
  • Pre-boil volume
  • Post-boil volume
  • Pre-boil SG
  • OG (post-boil SG)
