I brewed a barleywine the other day, OG 1.101 at the start.

At 42 hours, I added one and a half pounds of honey.

Is there a way to calculate how many points the honey added to my OG?

Thanks!

According to Beersmith, honey adds 35 gravity points per pound. So: if you have 5 gallons a 1.101 that's 505 points, plus (35 x 1.5) = 558, divided by something like 5.125 (guessing at the added volume for the honey) = 109. So, 1.109, more or less.

Cheers,

I made an addition of red wine grape-must in a saison once (here). My not-so-educated idea was to take SG reading right before the addition and then again 12-24 hrs after (allow it to disperse) and calculate the delta between the two. I figured (and gravity readings showed) grape-must to be 90-100% fermentable, so I could tack these added grav points to the OG for approx ABV calculation. Honey is nearly 90-100% fermentable, should get ya close.

My volume was only about 4.5 gallons (I parti-gyled the batch so I poured a little out of this one to increase the volume in the small beer), so following your example...

101 × 4.5 = 454.5
454.5 + (35 × 1.5) = 507
507 ÷ 4.5 = 112.6
OG = 1.113

This probably isn't accurate. I know I lost some volume reaerating the wort and a little through my blow off tube, but does this seem plausible to you?
