Going to NOLA. Need some pointers.

Going to NOLA in a few days for a pleasure trip. Any suggestions on what beers to try and where to drink? Staying downtown-ish at the Omni Riverfront or Omni Convention Center something like that. It's south of the French Quarter and southeart of the stadium.

Not beer but go to Commanders Palace for lunch. Order an entree get 3 of the best martinis ever for 75 cents!

I go all the time. Beer is not on the agenda. They do have some mighty fine local brews. I am always too full from eating. Try a Sazarac at different places. NOLA it is a great place for cocktails. Not so much beer, although it is getting better!

Hit Laffites for the best hurricane in the city. Beer selection is average. There's a decent selection at one place on Bourbon street. Can't think of the name. Couple blocks up on the right just past all the higher end restaurants where the strip clubs start. Southern Pecan by Lazy Magnolia is pretty good. Other than that enjoy trying all of the local brews. And don't be afraid to try the frozen drinks you see everywhere. They are usually loaded with booze! As jschein implies, cocktails and food are what Nola is all about. Enjoy!

We have lunch reservations there. My wife insisted.

I read somewhere about a bar called Earth or something like that. It was supposed to have a decent craft selection.

That's what we've heard. Pretty much everyone we know that's been to Commanders Palace says it is one of the best meals they've ever had. My wife was in NOLA a few years ago for a conference and insisted we go and Commanders Palace was on the short list of places to go.

You should check out The Avenue Pub and Emeril's Delmonico. Both are on St. Charles.

Found it. Beerfest on Bourbon. It's a hole in the wall but good selection.

I haven't drank a Dixie since before Katrina. They're contract brewed now, but you may as well have the lager.

There's a bar in Metairie called Lagers. Their thing last I was there was to serve local beers.

Ave Pub is a nice bar- not in the quarter but you can probably take a cab or street car. Another bar called The Bull Dog on Magazine Street. Both have alot of craft beers on tap. FYI Ave Pub doesnt really carry any of your normal brews like Coors, Ultra- They are mainly craft beers. If you go to Ave Pub try the dump truck fries.

The Bull Dog had a brew called Ghost in the Machine by Parish Brewing when I was there a month ago. It's an IPA and pretty tasty. It's hard to come by so you may have trouble finding it.

World of Beer in the Warehouse district has a nice selection.

Cooter Browns at the end of the French Quarter has some beers on tap. Haven't been in there in a year so not sure what they now have.

Bayou Burger on Bourbon has several beers on tap, including local brews.

There is a music club on Frenchmen Street at the end of the french quarter called DBA. If they have a guy playing named Little Freddie King, check him out. They also have a decent beer selection, at least they did when i was there 6 months ago.

Stay away from Beerfest on Bourbon. That place is a rip off if there ever is one.
One word of advise. Go to Bourbon for 3-4-1 if that's what you want to do. Note that 3-4-1 is crappy commercial beers with the exception of Heineken and Abita Amber (local brew).
Be aware of gimmicks (price wise) at the bars on bourbon. Unless a price is posted, they charge whatever they want. Ask for a price before purchasing, especially if you venture into Beerfest.
As I mentioned in a previous post, check out Bayou Burger on Bourbon. They do have some craft brews on tap.
Recommended craft bars: Ave Pub, Bull Dog on magazine st.
Second Line Brewing is a new craft brewery. They are only open Friday and Sat. They are located around city park.
