I don't make kombucha. That jar should be fine. I have used stainless and enameled pots, others have too. Crocks were used in the past. The MrBeer fermenter has a screw on lid with notches in the lip.
Just make sure the lid doesn't fit snug enough to be airtight. If you worry about contamination, put a bag over it, or plastic wrap, not tightly.

I'd say it would be fine. I don't make Kombucha though.

I've used a similar jar (that I got at Target) for fermenting all sorts of other stuff. Check it out:

It will need access to oxygen to produce acetic acid, so I just have a towel rubber banded over mine.

If you use a one-way airlock, you will not be making kombucha, just some boozy tea.

+1 -- I use mason jars with the middle of the two part lid top popped out, and replaced with a coffee filter. 6 half gallon Balls mason jars (for canning) can be found for less than $10 ... gives you a lot of Kombucha!

Ah! I didn't know that. I've only had kombucha once, and I did not notice any vinegar-like flavor in there.

It was young :) The longer it ferments (grows? brews?) the more vinegar flavor builds ... I've let a jar go for a good few weeks and the smell gets really really strong. Never have tasted it when it is like that.
