To me, the ginger beer plant looks a lot like water kefir.
Are they the same thing?

Thanks,
Yurtbrewer

GBP is not the same as water kefir grains, though they do look a bit similar and you can make a knockoff of ginger beer using water kefir grains (and you will find people selling water kefir grains as GBP. You may see these listed as tibicos or sugary kefir....you have to know what you are looking for and what you want is a plant from DSMZ Strain 2472(genetic testing so the true GBP can be identified).
The ginger beer plant and water kefir are visibly quite different. The ginger beer grains are smoother, smaller, and more opaque than the water kefir grains. To me, GBP can have a sandy quality when the plants is small, but as the plant gets older they become larger but they are still smooth, and they don't grow in the leaps and bounds that water kefir grains do.
You can visit www.yemoos.com, or www.happyherbalist.com, or www.gingerbeerplant.net for a great overview (and these sites usually have GBP for sale).

Thank you :) I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't buying overpriced "ginger beer plant" and really it was water kefir :) It's coming from gingerbeerplant.net

You are getting it from the right place, Jim at gingerbeerplant.net is fabulous. He does appreciate anyone we homebrewers can send his way. When I was talking with him last week he said he is the only person in UK that currently has the DSMZ Strain 2472. He said he rarely gifts his GBP anymore because it usually ends up in the trash. But, he has a true passion for GBP and said he has recently been struggling with deciding whether to keep selling his plants or just closing up his "shop". He said people don't seem to understand that the GB you make with water kefir grains or even the "dehydrated plant" made of ginger & yeast is not the true GBP that not many people know about.
But, it makes him happy when he can get his plant out. Please, send people his way!!
