I am looking to get a starter wine set as a gift to someone. The only problem is I do not know anything about wine. I was wondering if I could get some help on the starter set.

I guess the first question I would ask is does the person you are buying for already make wine? If so, then buying them an equipment package wouldn't be necessary. I would instead look to buy a nice wine kit.

However if this is their first attempt at making wine, then equip ment is needed and buying both the equipment and a wine kit could be a bit expensive . See if someone will go in with you on the combination of both equipment and a wine kit. This way the person you are purchasing for will get everything they need but you can spread the cost out a bit.

There are several online suppliers who can give you a good wine kit. Equipment can also be purchased online. I will not endorse any one website over the other here on the forum however, I will say that you should not pay more than $125 for a good basic equipment package. That same price is a good one for a wine kit itself.

Hope this helps!

No wine equipment, they are just getting into it. Any type of wine to make. I am looking for a good starter kit.

Honestly? If they are just getting into it and you aren't sure what they like or want to make, I would get them a gift certificate and two nice wineglasses.

Or a gift certificate and a 3 or 5 or 6 gallon carboy.

Or a gift certificate, two wine glasses, and a bottle of wine for inspiration.

OP: you can spend upwards of $200 on a kit and then an ingredient kit will be more. What is your budget?

Winexpert Selection series - White Merlot

Just about as middle of the road as you can get, but an award winning kit (gold medals in multiple years).

Hope that helps!

Buy them this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0380782278/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

And get them a $200 gift card to get started with. They can buy some equipment with that money and have enough left over to make a run to the grocery store to buy some fermentables (fruit, sugar, etc.).

I think fruit wines and this book are a great place to start. You can follow the instructions on a wine kit and never understand WHY you do what you do to a wine. This book and the recipes will get them well on their way to making excellent wines, and understanding the process so they can adapt and troubleshoot along the way.
