I'm thinking about buying a GE 7.0 locally via Craigslist. Seller says the unit turns on, but doesn't change temp. Seller thinks compressor needs to be replaced.

Should I buy?

Seller will take probably around $100 (or maybe less) for it.

Thanks any and all.

I can only say I bought a NEW 7.2 from home depot over 4th of july for 168. I cant see how that's a good deal (what he is offering)

Don't do it. Who knows what is wrong with it. If it were so easy to fix the seller would've done it already and sold it as working.

As Vesteroid said, a new one costs about $170 (regularly on sale at Best Buy, Home Depot, et al.). You might even be able to find a better deal if you have a coupon or something.

I wouldn't do it either. You'll pay a refrigeration tech more in labor to replace the compressor, evacuate the system, and replace the gas than you can purchase a new freezer. Keep searching, I found a 10cf Whirlpool for $60.

Probably looking at $100.00 hr for a tech Plus whatever refrigerant it uses, plus price of compressor and a new cap tube. oxy& acetylene, brazing rods. Air conditioners arent really worth putting a compressor in out of warranty. Let alone an appliance. Thats why the landfills are full of em.

Just to pile on, he should consider paying you $100 to take it away. What does it cost to dispose of a broken refrigerator in California?

Hi Chris - ended up not taking it. To be honest I'm lurking through old threads to figure out how I want to do it. Anyone got any solid threads on how to set up a chest freezer for fermentation.

next steps...kegging (i currently bottle, pain in my a$$); kegerator.

one can dream:)

Nope. just keep looking. I have purchased 14.7 working for $200 (new), 12.x for $100, and 7.x for $60. Keep looking!!!!!!

thanks cannman!

i'll continue to keep my eyes open! i generally keep to Craigslist since this will likely be a pick-up order. any other similar type websites you recommend looking at?

My town has its own facebook page called "Trade and sale" and that's where i've found most of my deals....

Hi all, I ended up finding a separate one (same model) the works perfectly. Got that sucker for $80!! What a steal! I'll post some photos later. Thanks again for all the advice.
