I just got 6, free 6gal food grade (HDPE2) buckets from local bakery, i know the guy who knows another guy who works there so thats how i knew they have them available but this place has been throwing away buckets like that for months/years, they get some kind of pre mixed dough or cake filling in those buckets, add hot water, mix, bake and throw away empty bucket. They are much sturdier than pail buckets and bigger than homedepo, and come with rubber lined lid, i use them for grain storage from last group buy but if i run out of fermenters i may try to use them for fermentation as well. If you know a friendly bakery its worth asking them about buckets like that

This is a tid bit that probably needs mentioned every so often. Little tips like this are assumed known by most on this forum, but obviously are not known by all. Thanks for bringing it back into the light for the new guys who may not know. :mug:

Restaurants throw them away also. When I worked at a local restaurant we had pails of soy sauce which, when emptied, would be tossed in the trash.

Yes, I get 5 gallon food grade buckets from my local grocery bakery shop, they contained corn syrup. Bucket, metal handle with lid and gasket for $1. Plus they run them thru their dishwasher so they are fairly clean when you get them. Grommet and air lock cost me $1.30 so I've got a nice 4 gallon fermentor for about $2.50. Also good for storing grain or ?
