Full boil: Is this a good propane burner / pot?

Hello,

I plan on doing 5 gal full boil batches from extract and eventually switch to all grain. I don't really plan on doing bigger batches than 5 gal.

Will this do? 36 quarts aluminium pot + 41,000 BTU propane burner. Time taken to reach a boil doesn't really matter to me, as long as it works and it's not too expensive.

Also, what else do I need to purchase to make the transition to full boil batches? I've heard I need a wort chiller, but apparently I can build one instead of buying one?

This burner and pot combo will be much better quality for the same price. getting a 40qt pot will allow you to be able to do 5 gallon all grain batches as well if you decide to upgrade in the future.

Yea you can build a wort chiller, your probably just going to want a simple immersion chiller. If you want to go the DIY route these guys are super cheap.

It should be fine. The pot looks a little thin, I prefer a thicker aluminum pot, but its not a deal breaker. And later you may find you want a second pot (for heating sparge water, etc) so you can upgrade later.

A simple wort chiller can be made from 25 or 50' of copper tubing. Lift two ends of the coil, attach high temperature tubing to the ends, attach one end with a fitting to a garden hose, the other end long enough to water your garden with the waste water.

+1 on the bulkier pot.

If at some point you want to add a ball valve (which I'll bet you'll want to because they're so dang handy!), I believe you'll be better off with the sturdier pot.

I have the Bayou Classic SP10, 55,000 BTU's – It'll bring 6.5 gallons of wort to a full boil in 17-20 minutes, depending on the mashout temperature. I highly recommend it!
 
Yea ive only ever seen their stainless one of that exact model and its built like a tank, and this one appears to be identical construction quality. The last thing you want when your boiling 7 gallons of sticky water is a wobbly burner. also if you dont have a big spoon already I highly recommend this as it will work well as a mash paddle when you upgrade to all grain that and its a 48" paddle that makes you look like you know what your doing, or like a witch brewing up a big batch of poison, either way you know you want it. And the build quality is way way nice.

The only problem you may have with that setup is that the burner is a turkey fryer, which means it has a timer on the gas line that will shut off the gas every 20 minutes or so (although I have heard that this can be defeated). For about $10 more, you can get this pot and burner at Reno Depot. The pot is bigger and the burner is rated 30 000 btu hotter. I have been using this setup for a couple of years now and am quite happy with it
