Freshhops twig?

Hey... I'm a hops growing newbie...

I ordered three rhizomes from Freshhops:

Cascade
Centennial
Jumbo Willamette

The Centennial looks pretty good... a couple white nobs on one end... some very small roots also on the rhizome. The jumbo Willamette looks really good... probably atleast 12 decent white nubs... and some nice looking roots.

My concern is with the Cascade rhizome. It literally looks like a stick. There's a couple very small roots... VERY small. I don't see anything that looks like it would turn into a sprout or some kind of new growth. One end of the rhizome is even partially hollow!

Has anyone had success starting a rhizome that looks so small and pitiful? I'm going to give it a week or so... but at this point... even though I've planted it... I'm skeptical that it will grow anything.

Yep. My cascade I got locally was pretty pitiful but its already sprouted. RDW(PIITFG) put it in the fecking ground! (wink)

Thanks... trust me... I planted it yesterday... about a day after I got it in the mail.

I just wasn't sure if I was wasting my time or not. Wish I would've taken a picture of it...

I have faster sprouting with the smaller than the larger ones.

That was the size of my Brewer's Gold last year. It has all the potential it needs to make it

My cascade was pathetic like that as well but I put it in the ground it took 3 weeks to sprout its now about 1.5" tall still the only sprout though.

Same stick with my cascade. Put it in the ground a few days ago with my Mt Hood. We'll see whats happens. I didnt do any special dirting. Just dug a hole, mixed in top soil, platned. Covered with Cow manure and mulch

I had a pretty anemic looking Cascade and Willamette... they are farther behind the others, but they are up. My Mt Hood is looking the best by far. I do have ONE cascade shoot that has grown about 3" this week though. It is amazing how many sprouts you will see after the first one gets up, the others are just under the surface waiting to explode!

My concern is with the Cascade rhizome. It literally looks like a stick.

My Goldings from Freshops (originally ordered from NB, delivered from FH) looked like a dead twig. No rootlets at all. Came up about 2.5 weeks after the Cascade which was thicker and had rootlets.

Goldings now has two bines, about 6" tall.

Cascades is a freaking weed! It will grow.

My two Hallertauers appeared to be the least promising of the rhizomes I bought, but they're the only ones that have both sprouted.

I got 4 rhizomes of cascade growing. I am not sure if it was lack of water, or frost, but they ended up turning yellow at the stalk and wilting. They were about 16" long and had small, sparse leaves.

Well, I took those wilted stalks and laid them in the dirt and covered them until just the leaves were showing. Now it looks like every one of those leaves has started it's own growth!

I also found a small caterpillar had made a nest on the top of one of the sprouts, and literally cut the top of the sprout off! That guy found his way into my gargabe disposal! Looked similar to what we use to call a "cut worm", that often chewed plants in our garden when I was a kid.

Lot's of great replies in this thread. I was going to try growing it anyhow... but it is definitely reassuring to see so many others have had similar rhizomes and found success.

Hopefully something nice will pop out in the next couple weeks.
