I have a rye pale ale in primary right now. I used US-05. I plan on letting it primary for another week or so, before I keg and let it set for a few weeks. I want to brew a Gumballhead right away after that. With the cost of dry yeast (my LHBS just doubled the price to $4), I also want to begin reusing yeast. Can I just pitch the fresh wort onto the yeast cake from the rye? If so, how much of the cake should use? Should I just siphon off all the liquid and leave the cake, or leave a 1/2 inch or so on the top of the cake? I now there is a lot of dead yeast in the cake, but I figure with fresh food, the live yeast will take off. Is that a safe assumption? Any advice would be appreciated.
