I took the handle off before cleaning my 6.5 gallon smooth-walled (Italian) carboy, now can't remember exactly where it goes on. Does it go in the valley between the two lower ridges (#1)? Or does it go on the neck below all of the ridges (#2)?

May I suggest getting a carboy carrier/harness. Will keep you a bit safer if it ever breaks. Happy Brewing!

Trust me, I only use the handle when totally empty. Those harnesses are great for the other times!

fwiw, I have six 6.5g italian carboys and each sports an orange handle wrapped below the bottom-most ring.
Never thought much about it though, so I may have been doing it wrong for all these years.
Either way, it really is only for empties or repositioning without lifting...

Cheers!

I was going to say, it should go in the trash... but you said you only use it when empty.
I'll occasionally use it for stability, but mine normally live in milk crates, strapped in.
