I was checking out parts in the LHBS and had my eye on a faucet with flow control. (I think it was a Perlick 650.) However, test fitting the parts in the store, I saw that the faucet and shank they had did not work together at all. The "ball" inside the flow control faucet stuck out far enough that it simply would not seal on the shank.

I thought these parts were all interchangeable, and so did the staff... but I guess not.

How do you know what fits on what? For example I have Perlick 630 SS faucets at home. The shanks are... whatever I put in my cart at the time. No brand name I am aware of. Do I have to get rid of them if I move to flow control?

I think it depends. I recently bought a flow control, Intertap I think. While reading reviews on some they noted that certain taps need a special shank. Mine fits on the same shank that held the prior Perlick without flow control.

Thanks. I thought there was some universal rule I had missed out on. I also have Perlicks at home and am looking at Intertap, good to know it should work.

Yep a difference between shanks.
I have a cheap flow control tap that only fits on one shank as it has a bit hanging out the back but my intertap flow control fits most of my shanks.

I can't remember but i think it still needed a small recess in the front of the shank that one shank i have doesnt have.

A bit of a mess really as shanks are not listed online with their tap conpatibility usually.

same here.. I have an older kegking brand flow control unit (before they came out with the intertaps) and that has a special shank, my intertap FC units use any standard shank WITHOUT a spring installed.
