Just made my first yeast starter using 150 gm DME to 1500ml water. As I was boiling it I realized I hadn't added the yeast nutrient (Wyeast) so added a scant 1/4 tsp. After that I saw crud floating in the pot. I don't remember seeing anything floating in it before adding the nutrients (brand new fresh bottle).

Thanks. That's what I did. I'm assuming the floaters were just "hot break" on a small scale.
