Has anyone ever fit a thermowell to a carboy cap?

When I was putting my brew kit together, I bought my carboy from a person who offered me his cap and thermowell (something like this: https://www.morebeer.com/…/hood-thermowell-smooth-neck-carb…). Unfortunately, the thermowell isn't fitted to the cap, and I pretty much destroyed the side port trying to get it in.

Is there a trick to this besides warming the cap and using some kind of slick liquid as a lubricant (was using Star-San solution)?

I did that for a long time before switching to stainless. It worked great. I got my thermowell from brewershardware.com

Just get one that fits very tightly, and like you said, warming or soaping helps
