definatelty one fro the record books. this was my best trip.
we got a late start saterday due to a stragler who didnt take into account the traffic on the belt parkway. chugged out to the fire island bridge at 340 which happened to be up anyway so i guess it didint matter that the guy was late. we usually have to wait for the birdge ot go up everytime,. (can be 10 minutes)
turned the corner into a very sunny warm day with no wind to speak of but a long tall ocean swell leftover from the storms offshore. almost 5 feet but a long 8 or 10 second period. very light crowd of only 19 people on a 110 foot aluminum, FV with triple diesels. that prolly gertnerate a couple thousand horses cause they use up thousands in gas over the 24 plus hours that we our out there.
about half were absoulte greenhorns who had no idea what they were doing. a few 90 plus pound girlfriends were dragged along as usual and that almost never turns out well for them lol (more later - i have seen divorce threats in the past on the boats as well as all out scream fests. - why the f did you bring me out here...im going to kill you when we get home - if i let you in the house. etc )
i set up for the long ride out to the grounds by grabbing a bunk in the hull down below and getting all my tackle ready for the battle that was about to take place. i got a little lazy and asked the mate to set up one of my rods (this would later cost me my first fish) . grabbed a bite and a drink and tried to get some sleep. i forgot my ear plugs so didnt get much sleep out to the southeast tip of the hudson canyon in 600 ft of water 92 miles from the dock . it took a slogging 7 hours to get out there.
the captain read fish and had good temperature readings so he decided to drift to see if the fish would follow us. absoulte beautiful night about 62 degrees air temp water about 69 but not good color. usually purple or turquoise it was a light green prolly from the storms and swell?
immediatley they started chumming spearing , ground menhaden, and fish chunks. captain yelled out theat the screen was lit up with fish at 150 ft down. two big sharks came into the slick and grabbed two lines and bit them both off pretty quick like a few minutes but then 20 minutes later at maybe 11 oclcok the first tuna came tight in the bow then 2 mins later one in the stern then THEY CAME!
down the starborad side like ducks in a shooting alley one after another all the rods went off. screaming madness. loud burning drags. steam flying off the line. 10 fish on at once. i was about the 5th down the line and mine went off just like the rest and it was game on. litereally 5 secs later the knot that the mate tied parted and i was upset but not worried as i knew you just had to get you bait down to 150.
put on another butterfish started to let the line down and at 149 ft the rod was almost pulled out of my hands . this time about a minute later the fish was able to spit the hook. . again my mistake . i used the boats small circle hooks and not my usual 8/0 4x live bait tuna hooks. i switched to my usual rig. by this time about half a dozen 90 lb class tuna had hit the deck and although frustrated i still was not woried because of the amoutn of fish we had found in the deep. i knew i would get plnety more chances. then it died. we had drifted out of the zone.
i took us about another hour to set up on the right drift and tehn we found them again and i came tight on my first fish of the night at 230 iin the morning. a huge 90 lb yellow.
my first tuna in a few years. i was very happy. i got what i came out here for. i could go to bed if i wanted and still come home with more than i needed. anything now was icing on the tuna sashimi seaweed salad that i could already taste. speaking of bed the two girls got sick on the ride out and then went down into the hold and slept the whole 24 hours . no joke. a very expensive nap.
the capt didnt liek that the fish woudlnt stay under the boat so he anchored up in 6ooft of water to wait for the morning bite. it took a while but at around 5 am the first rod screamed then another then i yelled here they come and once again it was lights out fishing. get a bait to 150 and it was game on. i got 4 yellows and a long fin. i cant move my arms. the boat had 34 fish for 19 people but only about half of the fisherman knew what they were doing and were able to fight or land these big tuna. if we had experienced anglers we easily would have boated over 60. it was easy to get the bite.
the usual whales dolphin, shrimp made a showing out there. we even did some mahi fishing in the morning and got some small tuna on topwater poppers which was crazy. the galley chef made us sashimi and rolls for lucnh. the absolute freshest sushi you will ever eat.
tired soar and full of tuna. definatley one of my best trips.
sorry for the very long post. heres some pics to make up for it.
