First use of Hop spider....my impressions

I bought a hop spider because I found on one of my homebrews that the filter that fits to the inside of the kettle would get blocked causing the flow rate to slow to a trickle. I bought some of the hop socks but I misplaced a couple and only have 3 left. If you buy the less expensive hops bags make sure you don't buy this one like I did:

The laces are made out of cotton, you want to buy the nylon laces with a fastener. The hop bags can leak out the small opening and once I had a batch where a whole bag had leaked its contents into the boiling wort.

My main objection to the bags is that these fill up easily even though you added only like 1oz or 20g so you need a few of them. A hop spider would never need to be replaced because of reusability and it is difficult to misplace it because no one is going to pick it up and throw it in the bin because of its small size.

This bag looks quite good: Food Grade Nylon Filter Bag Brewing Hops Filter Whiskey Craft Home Beer Brew | eBay

Although it is cheaper than the hops spider, I would think that it still works okay. But you can see in the photos the small gap at the top of the bag. This can sometimes leak.

On my next batch I am thinking of doing a Doppel Brau and hope to save on my electricity expenditure since it is less water to heat.

I also have never dryhopped before in my life and wonder what the dry hopping spider would be like.

I gave up using hop socks or hop bags or a hop spider. I wasn’t getting the same utilization and the beers didn’t taste good. I didn’t want to do experiments to find out what additional quantity of hops I needed to use. But I’m guessing it would have been 15 to 20% more hops needed. The hop flavors were all muted because the hot wort can’t get to the hops and the hops aren’t free circulating. Try it and see your results.

Are you using a piece of apparatus like this?

I was just thinking there must have been a reason why I switched to hop bags in the first place was because this filter was getting clogged with particles and would slow the kettle tap to a trickle. It depends on the exact equipment one is using if this has ever happened to them.

You can see in one of Larry's videos:

There must be a reason why people are using hop bags and hop spiders, if it wasn't even needed then nobody would be buying them.

Actually, I realized to myself the reason why some people get blocked kettle filters whereas others are able to use the free floating method with no problem. Ime, it depends if you are using whole hops flowers or pellets. It's only the pellets than block the filter, this won't happen if you used the hops flowers.

Since I started brewing on a Brewzilla, I have stopped using anything for containing the hops on the hot side. By using the whirlpool arm during chilling and then letting it rest for 5 minutes, all of the hop matter (I'm sure that a small bit gets through, but it's minimal) collects on the top of the false bottom and does not get sucked into the pump, which I use to transfer to the fermenter.
