As usual they were out of most hops at the LHBS but they had some Willamette whole hops. I haven't done this yet so it should be interesting. Oh and I didn't buy a hop bag. Here's the schedule:

60 min Sorachi Ace 14% .5oz pellets
45 min Willamette 5.4% 2oz whole hops
15 min US Golding 4.5% 1oz pellets
15 min Sorachi Ace 14% .5oz pellets
5 min Willamette 5.4% 2oz whole hops

OG 1.076

I prefer whole hops and never use a hop bag. I have a bazooka screen in the bottom of my kettle.

I found out the hard way that without some kind of screen, whole hops can be a real pain. I did a beer last weekend and used 5 oz of whole - I was straining out hops for about 20 minutes.

If you use carboys onstead of an ale pail, dumping in your wort isnt as viable an option. Using an auto-siphon, it will get clogged often.

I use a funnel with a mesh inside of it. Pour the wort through that and the whole hops get strained out just fine. As Jamo99 mentioned don't use an autosiphon it'll just get clogged.

I used to use an autosiphon with all whole hops. Never had a problem with clogging, but I never tried it with a mixture of whole and pellets.

Those are a lot more messy than I expected. They soak up a lot of wort and I didn't take that into account so I only ended up with about 4.5gal instead of my target of 5.5. Not that I won't use them again but I will start out with more wort.

I love whole hops, pure love. I go to Wal-mart's hosery section and find the little knee high pantyhose in the little plastic ball, I think they're $0.33 per pair. They make great hop bags and I can even keep track of the additions by color. I find them quite useful.
