first time using gelatan....what a Pita

Normally the technique is to rack to a corney, pressurize, then run through a 3 or 1 Micron reusable filter, into a fresh corney. always worked well for me.

i thought this time i would use the gelatan and compare .

boy what a pain. i boiled the water, disolved the gelatan, cooled and dumped in to the corney. I shook it up and let it sit a couple of days.

Then I crash cooled for a couple of days.

today, I thought I would try to suck the crud from the bottom of the corney. I pressurized to 10 psi and and used a portable plastic faucet to try and expel the gunk.

what a pain. my tube and poppet clogged at least 6 times, i kept cleaning it, never got close to getting the crap out. I just gave up

not sure what to do now. any ideas what I did wrong ??
 
From my limited experience cold crashing with gelatin works great and is very easy if it's done before racking it to your keg. From what I've seen left over at the bottom of my fermenter after using gelatin, I bet it was a pain trying to use a picnic tap. I would recommend racking to a new keg and I'm sure it will be fine.
 
use gelatin in a secondary fermenter.

After fermentation is 100% complete, I rack to a new carboy (brite tank) and immediately crash cool. After 48 hours in the cooler I add the gelatin (same procedure, bloom, heat, dump in carboy). I let it settle for 5-6 days in the cooler at 35F. At that point all the junk is crashed to the bottom of the carboy and I can rack CLEAR beer off into the keg. Hook to gas and carb. Every pint I pour from first to last is brite and clear.
 
I've read it'd recommended to trim a bit off (1/4") from the liquid dip tube so you don't suck up the sediment. However, I'm getting my kegs on Monday, and don't have any experience with doing that.

I'm currently crashing with gelatin in a secondary before transferring to the keg so i don't have to worry about it.

If you add gelatin to boiling water, you make jello. You can either:

A. Add the gelatin to cold water, then heat to around 150*, and no hotter.

B. Boil the water first, wait until it cools to 150* or so.

If you get the gelatin to near boiling temps, it makes jello.
