Ive read through a few threads and just kind of confused about the whole yeast harvest, washing, etc(dont know the correct wording). I want to start saving the yeast I'm using instead of paying $8 or so a pop everytime I brew. From what I read, basically what I'm interested in doing is putting my beer in the fermenter, having it ferment for a few weeks, keg it, and put the yeast at the bottom of the fermenter in mason jars and use it for a couple more batches. Is there any problem with that? I never use a secondary anymore, do i need use a secondary if I want to save the yeast? How many flavors are going to be in the yeast from hops or fruit peels I add to the fermenter? Thanks for any help.

You don't need to secondary the beer to be able to harvest the yeast from the primary. Yeast stores best under the beer that is left in the primary after racking to the bottling bucket. As long as the yeast in the primary is covered by the left over beer it could remain in the primary for weeks before harvesting. A little beer on top of the yeast or a full five gallons until harvest doesn't make a difference.
