Hi all first time brewer here. I am about to start my first brew and was wondering what suggestions some of you have. I really have no idea what I am doing. Are there any instructional dvds or books that would help. I have been reading around the site and it looks like it will be very helpful.

+1 on reading howtobrew.com! Then begin perusing the forums to gather more ideas/techniques and if you have a question that you can't find the answer to via the search function then by all means ask.

This is what I used for my first brew, then got the book. Lots of great info, and gives you most what you need to know. Read it and you will be good to go on your first beer.

Once you think you have a grasp on all that needs to be done, go through the process in your head a few times or write it down. "First I need to sanitize everything, then I need to measure out the water, etc."

This way, during your first brew, you are familiar with what step comes next and are comfortable with the order of things. It will help make your first brew stress free and more enjoyable - the way it should be!

Here is a website that has some basic instructions on the different brewing processes. Starts with basic extract brewing then looks into steeping grains with extract as well as introducing you to mini-mashing and all-grain brewing.

There are also many extract recipes listed on this site that will use the steeping of some grains prior to the boil. This may allow you to by pass the pre-assembled kits and find something you want to try on your own.

Hope this helps.

Hey buddy, you from Brewster, NY? I'm right across the state line in CT.

Where do you buy your equipment?

Ahhhhh, I remember my first brew. Okay technically it was wine. When I think back now it's hilarious. Got a wine starter kit that came with a DVD. Watched the whole DVD, then as I went through the process of making the kit I was watching the DVD again bit by bit. "First...mix up a gallon of cleaning solution..." etc etc etc.

As a new brewer myself i had the same questions. I went to Homebrewmart out here in San Diego and they gave me all the info i needed. So what i guess im trying to say is find an good home brew store with some people who know what the hell theyre are doing, theyll minimize the rookie mistakes!
