Boy, the right flux sure makes a difference! Used Harris Stay-Bright. Fluxed both parts, left it for 60 seconds, put them together and waited another 60, then heated with a little butane torch and gently applied solder.
Then of course, I bumped the fitting and moved it before it was cool Slid it back in place and applied a bit more heat, then turned the fan on it to let it cool. I can see from the picture that it may not be the best solder ever, but I'm sure I'll get better with practice.
Took all of 5 minutes. Very easy and seems very solid. Much better than the JB-Weld I originally used. You can see in the first picture that it popped off the first time I bumped it.
