Hello
I'm trying to come up with my first recipe ever. Going to try to make a porter.

This is what I have:

2lbs US Carmel 80L Malt steeped
1lbs 5oz UK Dark Crystal steeped

6lbs light liquid malt extract at boil

2oz US Centennial hops 10% 15 min from end of boil

WLP013-London Ale for yeast

I have no clue what I'm doing (recipe creation wise). So any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks
Todd

I am still new to making my own recipes and brewing but I think you need a bittering hop something like some fuggles for a porter.

Definitely a boiling hop put in at the beginning of the boil. Fuggles could work, but I might suggest Northern Brewer or East Kent Goldings. Somewhere between 1/2 an oz. and 1.5 oz. depending on how bitter you want it. Perhaps check some of the recipes in the recipe section? I've only brewed one porter. I assume this is a five gallon batch?

Also, consider adding 1/4- 1/2 lb. black patent malt to your steeping grains for some color and bitterness. Perhaps also decrease the amount of crystal/cara you use by how much black patent you use if you decide to use it. For example: 1-3/4 lb. and 1/4 lb. black patent, etc.. Perhaps someone with more experience will chime in, but if not, good luck!

- That's way too much Crystal (Crystal + Caramel). Cut it down to about a pound max.

- You need some roast malt. I personally don't like black, but love Chocolate. Suggest about 1 lb of Chocolate malt. ..... others will tell you that you need Black (I don't agree with that, I think it makes it too harsh). Part of the hobby is to experiment and find out what you like.

- Move the hops. Add 1 ozs Centennial at 60 minutes to go, then a half at 15 and a half at 5. This should give you about 40 IBUs which is pretty decent (Rager scale, assuming a 2.5 gallon boil).
