Hello all,

I've been through a number of homebrews but have always either used a recipe kit or found a recipe online. In an attempt to learn how to start creating my own recipes I've started reading Designing Great Beers by Ray Daniels, which I strongly recommend!

For my first self-created recipe I decided to make an IPA. For ease I have attached an image of the recipe below from my Beer Smith software. I appreciate any feedback, tips, or suggestions that anyone can provide.

Thanks!

Looks good overall. I personally would drop the crystal down to 5%. It won't be "bad" with 8% I just don't like having that much crystal in an IPA. I also think you should up your late addition and dry hop. I like to do 1oz/gallon of late additions and dry hops for IPAs

Thanks for the feedback. Is your recommendation regarding the crystal malt because you think it will be too sweet of an IPA with 8%?

Also, just so I make sure I understand your recommendation are you saying to typically have 1oz/gallon of aroma hops AND dry hops. So in other words your recommendation is for my 2.7 gallon batch to have:
2.7 oz of Centennial hops at flame-out (as opposed to the .38oz I currently have)
and
2.7 oz of Cascade hops for dry hopping (as opposed to the .64oz I currently have)

Or are you saying combined between my aroma and dry hops I should have 2.7 oz?

I appreciate the clarification and any additional feedback anyone can provide!

Yea, a little too sweet on the back end. Reducing the crystal makes it more drinkable IMO.

Yes, 3oz of aroma AND 3oz of dry hops. That will make a great IPA. For a standard pale ale I'll do .5oz/gallon

Thanks! Should I just add more American two row to make up for the remaining 3% if I reduce the crystal malt to 5%?
