Hello all,

I am brewing up my first IPA this weekend. I was hoping to get a little feedback on my recipe from knowledgeable people. Does the following recipe look like it would end up being a tasty concoction?

Fermentables
3 lb Dry Malt Extract - Extra Light
3 lb Dry Malt Extract - Light
2 lb Liquid Malt Extract - Munich - (late addition)
8 lb Total

Steeping Grains
0.5 lb American - Caramel / Crystal 40L

Hops
60 min - 1 oz Warrior
5 min - 1 oz Falconer's flight
5 min - 1 oz Simcoe
flameout - 1 oz Falconer's flight
flameout - 1 oz simcoe
dryhop - 1 oz Falconer's flight
dryhop - 1 oz Simcoe

Yeast
Safale - US-05

This will be a 3-3.5 gallon brew size.

Thanks for taking a look!

Yes, it looks good! The only suggestions I have would be to replace a pound of the DME with a pound of corn sugar to make sure you get a low-enough FG.

Do you have any brewing software? They have free recipe calculators online (I've been using Brewer's Friend) and that can tell you your OG and IBUs and that will help us give better advice.

I'd target an OG of about 1.065-1.070, and IBUs of 65ish.

Thanks Yooper! I was considering the sugar option. I do use Brewer's Friend. It is super helpful to help figure out OG and IBU's etc.

Depends on what you are going for. The hopping schedule looks good. The extract ingredient types look good.

But it's a lot for only 3.5 gallons of wort. If you are going for a high gravity and bitttered Imperial IPA, then I'd say it looks fine (1.092 OG, 110 IBU). I would suggest 2 packets of that yeast if you stick with this recipe, would be underpitching quite a bit with only one.

If you had 5 gallons of wort with the same ingredients, you'd be at 1.064 which is great for an IPA. IBU's are a tad bitter at 76, but not bad.

I would suggest playing with the recipe calculator at Brewers Friend. I inputed most of your numbers and attached it as an example.
